FAQ
Is IOTA Storage part of IOTA?
No. IOTA Storage is an independent project that runs on IOTA Rebased. It is not affiliated with the IOTA Foundation.
Does it have its own token?
No. You pay for storage in IOTA, and storage nodes stake IOTA. There is no other token at any step.
Is it on mainnet?
No. It runs only on IOTA testnet, with test IOTA from the faucet. An audit and mainnet are later steps of the roadmap.
Can I lose my data?
It is a testnet: the network may be redeployed and data may be lost. Do not use it as the only copy of anything important.
Is my data private?
No. Every blob is public: anyone who knows its blob ID can read it through the aggregator. Encrypt your data before storing it if it must stay private. Deleting a blob removes it from the storage nodes, but does not guarantee that no copy remains elsewhere (caches, other users).
How long is my data kept?
For the number of epochs you pay for: from 1 to 53 per purchase. On testnet an epoch lasts 1 day. You can renew a blob (or a site) before it expires. When it expires, the nodes delete its data and the aggregator answers 404.
Can I delete a blob?
Yes, if it is deletable (the default in the app, the publisher and the CLI) and you own its Blob
object.
Deleting returns the Storage object to your wallet. A permanent blob cannot be deleted before its
end epoch.
Who pays the gas?
You, in IOTA, from the same wallet: about 0.006 IOTA to store a blob and about 0.002 IOTA to renew or delete it, on testnet.
What is the largest file I can store?
About 142 MiB (149,286,452 bytes) with the 100 shards of the network. The public publisher accepts up to 10 MiB per request.
How do I use it from my own code?
Read blobs with plain HTTP requests to the aggregator. To store blobs from a browser or a server, use the app or the reference JavaScript client (see Reference tools).
How do I give my site a readable address?
Point an IOTA Names name to the Site: blog.alice.iota is then served at
https://blog.alice.iotastorage.com/. See IOTA Names.
Can I run a storage node?
Not yet. Today only the 4 project nodes run. Independent operators are on the roadmap. See Operate a node.
Where does my payment go?
To a reward pool per epoch. At each change of epoch, 3 % goes to the project treasury and the rest to the storage nodes and their stakers. See Economics.
Is the code open source?
The project repository is not public yet.
